A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the period preceding former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
